Incendiary - The Molotov Sessions - Act II

The Molotov Sessions
August 10, 2013 - Escobar, Cubao X
A Review - Part 2

_______________________________________________________________

So I thought I'd start Part 2 of this here narrative with a list, kinda like ol' Letterman, of the top 5 things you thought you'd never see in a gig:

# 5 - Star Wars!!
# 4 - A Space Cadets board game!!!

# 3 - Hobbits!!
# 2 - The DICKie ( you know who you are! )

and number 1 : A cowboy!!

Pa-arbor ng gitara!

Yessiree, #1 on the list leads us to our next act, blues/country flavored Vagabonds, Bad Omen's own Albert Ascona's other group. Hee Haw pardners!! Dun sa first part nung review, at the end, I posted a question kung meron na ngang nagbago? Pwes, eto bago! I didn't catch the lead guitarist's name, pero all I can say is whoah! I'm reminded of The Stray Cats' Brian Setzer, busting out those blues/rock n roll chops. Pati Dead Milkmen na-reremind ako sa tugtugan nila, minus of course, the juvenile element of the milkmen. Must be because of the frantic, jangly guitar. Midway to their set, Albert asked the crowd, "Para kayong nastroke ah!", kasi everyone was just trying to try and absorb it all. I know I was doing the same and props to the group for presenting this type of music and doing it well. Oh and by the way, the drummer is Albert's own chikiting, which is a huge plus for dads during the gig, seeing a father and son tandem in a band, and the bassist is Mally Paraguya, ex P.O.T. and Tame the Tikbalang.

The calm before the storm?
I knew it was then going to be a slam affair when the next band came up to the plate. Throw, of course, as we all know is what became of Dead Ends. Al Dimalanta has soldiered on and continue to shout with that very familiar voice of his which in my opinion is one of the most recognizable voices in local hardcore. Ewan ko ah, pero whenever I listen to Throw, I always reference ung Dead Ends' Damned Nation, kapansin pansin ung change nila by that album which was totally different from the other two that came before. And Throw continues in that same vein with aggressive pounds and beats plus fiery, thought-provoking words. The downside to it all is that hindi na nakakatugtog ng tama ung banda pag nagkakasayahan na, ( I think nagkaroon ng mic probem during their set due to the slamfest ) hence the need for punk bouncers to keep the crazed boys ( and girls! ) from the band. They did a couple of Dead Ends evergreens Guns-Noise Barrage/ Dreamer/ New Life which is always a trip to shout along to. Personally, I would have loved to hear Lapdogs/City ( or maybe Complaints!! ) but that's just me.

Wag Kalimutan Ang Ingay!
Money shot c/o grasi
Libre beer doon!!!
Ser ser, pramis katuwaan lang lahat yan...pramis...

Hilera was the next group up and as I noticed sa Saguijo gig, the girls took to the floor quite eagerly. One even shouted, "Tumayo kayo, mga tangina nyo!", not knowing na baka napagod lang ung mga kids sa Throw hehe....Anyway, one thing that I like about this group is 3 piece lang sila pero buong buo ung tunog nila. I have always been curious how 3 piece groups can create that wall of sound as much as a full band can. Personally, I have never been familiar with their songs, except for Rhyme without Reason which at one time was "everywhere". Ang tanong ko lang, nasan na ung upright bass?

humilera kayo!
Time for some soulful, reggae/ska as next band, Dandimites came on to mellow out the night. I would have to describe their set as ( to coin a modern, pinoy word ) chillax lang as the music seemed to appease all the crowd, as the punks and skins skanked to the roots-rock-reggae. We even caught a scent of the forbidden five-finger as the band played on. Funny though while the band was working their magic, we caught sight of a poor sod, lying face down apparently unaware of what has been happening and happily dozing off to dreamland. Nakakatawa, pero in hindsight, somebody should've helped out...Hopefully, a lesson learned in how to take in alcohol, or whatever the hell substance you take. Wag naman sana naabutan na ng liwanag dun, ugh!

a little bit of soul in your ska...

Bucket List # 35: Pass out during a gig, wasted -- check!

We went home after the Dandimites set, missing out on the last band on the bill Coffeebreak Island pero, all in all, I'd say sakto sakto lang din, a good sampler of what the local scene has to offer, from the offbeat, to the aggressive, to the soulful.  Here are some more links to the event and the bands:
